Module 11: Maintaining Mindful Routines

  • Create a plan to maintain the routines you’ve established and continue your practice after you complete the coaching portion of the program.
  • I will guide you to make a plan to continue your practice, because I know how difficult it is to maintain and build upon a routine without guidance and accountability.

Now that you know how to find balance with less overwhelm and support your child’s emotional growth, are you ready to get started?

Why The Lockhart Mindful Method Exists

During 15 years of working with kiddos who struggle to attend, understand and manage their emotions, integrate sensory info, and regulate their impulses, I’ve worked with parents in all stages of their parenting journey:

  • Just realizing their child needs more support
  • Currently participating in therapies but something’s missing
  • Previously pursued or receiving therapies but still need more support
  • They felt like they were failing as a parent, crying every day worrying about their child, and feeling lost and doubting their worth as a parent.
  • It also impacted their relationship with their partner because they didn’t agree on how to approach their child’s behaviors.
  • They struggled to bond with their child and truly enjoy time with them because they were constantly fearing or anticipating meltdowns or power struggles.
  • And they felt isolated…their family and friends just don’t get it because they didn’t have the same struggles with their children, or they believe in methods that don’t work for their child and just do more harm than good.

No matter where they were at, they were looking for help because their child's struggles to understand and manage their emotions and sensory experiences was impacting their entire family.

Not to mention, their child:

  • Was stuck in a constant state of stress and overwhelm.
  • Wasn't enjoying their childhood experiences because their emotions, feelings, and thoughts were too overwhelming.
  • Needed nurturing and support specific to their needs without being disciplined for uncontrolable behaviors or judged for being sensitive and emotional.

I created the Lockhart Mindful Method because I realized that my teachings as a healthcare provider were solid and the results were possible, but the setting was limiting. Individual sessions in healthcare are focused on the child, leaving just a few minutes to discuss "home practice" with their parents...this just wasn't cutting it. I found that without structure, consistency, 100% parent involvement, a step-by-step approach, and accountability... progress is slow and life often takes over and makes it difficult for parents to follow through with recommendations.

So, I designed this 16-week parent coaching program specifically to account for those variables and to ensure that families get the support and specific guidance they deserve in order to make real progress. It is great as a stand-alone program, as well as an excellent compliment to therapies like Occupational Therapy and play therapy. It can even prevent the need for behavioral therapies. It can also reduce the time in therapy and accelerate progress because you get the tools that YOU need at home, school, and in the community.

Why The Mindful Method Works

The Lockhart Mindful Method is a step-by-step approach using mindfulness, sensory-based practices, and evidence-based self-regulation tools and strategies in order to help children understand, embrace, and process their emotions, thoughts, and sensory information. We don't aim to stop behaviors, we aim to empower children to use different behaviors to express their needs.

Benefits of mindfulness and sensory play for kids

  • Increased focus, attention, self-control, problem solving, self-awareness.
  • Improved classroom participation, academic performance, ability to resolve conflict.
  • Decreased levels of stress, depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior.
  • Healthy self-esteem, empathy, compassion, overall well-being

Advantages of the mindful method

This trauma and sensory informed approach to addressing meltdowns and self-regulation works so incredibly well because it takes into consideration:

  • What is triggering your child's emotional meltdowns. If you don’t know the underlying reasons for YOUR child’s difficult behaviors (thoughts, feelings, emotions), the behaviors won’t stop. They’ll likely increase because the emotions and sensory experience behind the behaviors isn't being addressed.
  • Which daily activities will naturally reduce your child's emotional overwhelm. Provide the sensory input YOUR child’s nervous system needs to stay regulated rather than in a constant state of fight, flight, freeze.
  • YOUR child’s emotional and sensory preferences. When you know what makes your child tick, you’ll know which self-calming strategies to choose and teach them.
  • YOUR child’s learning style. If you know how your child experiences and processes the world around and inside them, you can teach them regulation skills in a way that makes sense to them and ensures success.

The Lockhart Mindful Method is not a quick fix or bandaid solution. With coaching and expert guidance every step of the way, you'll get answers related to YOUR situation, not just a general 1-size-fits-all approach.

About Your Mindful Parenting Guide

About Your Mindful Parenting Guide

Ty Lockhart, M.A., CYT

Hi, I’m Ty and I'm on a mission to empower children to love themselves, embrace their emotions, and grow to thrive as resilient, confident beings. I am ealso ager to help children form a deeper connection within and lead their parents and other caregivers to create a safe space for that growth to happen.

I bring 15 years of experience as a social communication specialist and extensive training in sensory processing, self-regulation, executive functions, social emotional development, trauma, and mindfulness.

I specialize in self-regulation and work with parents and young children who struggle with handling big emotions and sensations, using mindfulness practices and evidence-based sensory strategies.

I am also a highly sensitive person with ADHD and sensory processing differences. I’ve always been drawn to working with children who struggle with emotional and sensory sensitivities. As a child, I too struggled to understand my sensory sensitivities and learn how to regulate my big emotions...and so did my parents. I didn't get the emotional support and tools I needed as a child and it took a toll on my emotional, physical, and mental health.

That’s why I’m so passionate about applying my experience as a sensitive person and my professional training to help parents and their sensitive child understand their experiences, embrace their emotions, and learn essential, life-long tools to thrive.

What Parents Have To Say

MINDY SCHAEFER

"All of the content in this program was great and I thought I understood it before but the information and guidance I got from Ty was super helpful and I needed it. The weekly consultations were so helpful. I don’t think I could’ve done it on my own self-guided with just the information, I wouldn’t have been so successful. Ty’s patience with us and support when I felt like I was failing was invaluable.

This program really helped me to transform the way I looked at things. Having more patience and being more tolerant of their behaviors because I realized that it’s something they’re seeking whereas before I couldn’t understand and it got me frustrated. Being able to identify their needs was great, but also the course was about addressing those in a productive and meaningful way. The tools helped me to model better behavior, whereas I couldn’t bridge that gap before because I didn’t have the right tools for our kids.

We definitely recommend this program for parents who have a lot of challenges with their child and they’d really benefit from the course."

THE FISHER FAMILY

We feel so grateful to have found Ty and The Lockhart Mindful Method at such a crucial point in our highly sensitive daughter’s growth and development. We’ve always known (from the day she was born!) that our 3.5-year-old daughter Leah processes things differently than other kids, and we have always been attuned to her needs and sensitivities. But when the big emotions and sensory sensitivities really started coming online in toddlerhood, we felt totally lost.

This program was the right investment for us. Ty saw us through one of the most difficult and tumultuous periods of Leah’s life so far. As parents, we knew we needed to start working on ourselves first, learning more about our daughter and unlearning so much from our own pasts. But we truly felt that we were able to get both benefits out of the program - support for us as parents and support for our daughter. There will be many hard days, phases, and transitions as she grows. But we feel a calmness and preparedness to handle, support, and love her through them.

Thanks to Ty we feel like we are truly on the path to raising our beautiful girl into a strong, empathetic, and resilient adult. We have so much love for Ty and her program and highly recommend her to other parents struggling to find the best support for their child.

THE KEELS FAMILY

"We can’t sing Ty’s praises enough! When we initially began working with Ty, our daughter, M., had difficulty regulating her emotions and was extremely impatient. Our days consisted of a lot of crying, screaming, and full-blown tantrums. Ty taught us various breathing exercises such as “singing bowl,” “breathing ball,” "Hot Chocolate Breath," and M.’s favorite, "Rainstorm." Ty also helped us craft a social story and taught M. “The Waiting Song” to help improve her patience. These things have given M. a variety of tools to use when her emotions are getting too big. M. is now better able to recognize when she is feeling out of control and will often start doing one of the breathing exercises unprompted.

The results are undeniable - overall, M. is calmer and able to focus on a structured activity for longer periods of time. When she does experience a negative emotion, M. is able to deal with it in a beneficial manner, as opposed to having a tantrum. We are so grateful for Ty's help in making our daily lives less stressful and recommend her to anyone seeking to help their child manage emotions."

CALEB SCHAEFER

“Before working with Ty, we were stuck in, 'How do you do it?' We thought all the strategies were like...'duh', but they’re not.”

In this video Caleb shares his takeaways from the Lockhart Mindful Method program…watch as he reflects on his experience growing up, how it impacted the way he disciplined his son, and what he did to change how he parented his son so that he grows up loving who he is and enjoys being with his dad.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the program is right for me?

The best way to decide is to read all the above information, learn about each Program Module HERE, then book a Clarity Call with Ty. We'll get clear on what you're struggling with right now, your goals for your family, and how the program can be individualized for YOUR family's needs.

What age is this program for?

The content and strategies in the Lockhart Mindful Method are most effective for parents of children between 6 months-to-8 years old. However, families with older children may also benefit, as every child learns differently.

When can I start?

You can enroll in the Lockhart Mindful Method program at any time. Let's get you the support and expert guidance you need now...no more waiting to make the change your family needs right now.

How do I sign up?

My highest priority is to ensure that families are getting the most appropriate, effective, quality services for their situation. Schedule a Clarity Call to determine your eligibility and ensure it is the right investment for you.

What if I can't attend a coaching call?

All calls are recorded and available for replay, so if you can’t attend or need a refresher, you can go back and get your answers when it works for your schedule. Parents complete a question submission form prior to each call, so you can submit your question ahead of time.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes, I understand this can be a big investment for families. I aim to be flexible and work with families to find a payment option or level of support their budget allows. I'm happy to discuss options on your Clarity Call.

Can I trust that this method will work?

I provide you with all the knowledge, tools, and strategies I've accrued over 15 years of experience and extensive training in sensory processing, self-regulation, executive functions, social emotional development, trauma, and mindfulness. I've used the strategies I teach in the program with children diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and social anxiety, as well as highly sensitive children and others without diagnoses...and the results were undeniable.

The Lockhart Mindful Method was born because I realized the limitations of individual child-centered sessions in healthcare, which lacked parent education and guidance to support children's emotional development. Without 100% parent involvement, a step-by-step approach, and accountability... progress is slow. So, I designed this parent coaching program specifically to account for those variables. I cannot predict or guarantee a specific outcome, as results differ for each individual and family situation. Results are dependent upon your efforts, decisions, and your unique situation. If you do the work and implement the strategies you will see results.

What if I can't finish within 16 weeks?

That's ok, you can definitely take longer to go through the modules. The 16 weeks refers to the personalized coaching portion of the program; you will have access to the program lessons and resources for the life of the Lockhart Mindful Method Program so you can continue learning after coaching is complete. And know that there are options to continue receiving weekly coaching and accountab

What if I can't afford it?

  • If you truly can't afford it, reach out to learn other ways we can work together to suite your situation.
  • If your reservation is that it feels like a lot of money to invest, I completely understand...trust me, I've been there! The best advice I ever got was to ask myself, "What is the 'cost' of NOT enrolling?" Is it emotional energy with constant struggles? Stress on relationships with your child, partner, friends? Time and effort researching info, trying to piece things together? Physical and mental exhaustion from not getting enough sleep or down time to recoup? Your child's continued overwhelm and struggle? "Which investment 'costs' more?"

What if my child is already in therapy?

Therapies like play therapy, counseling, and occupational therapy can be wonderful for getting your child the 1:1 attention they need. But they can lack parent education and creation of a specific home program to help expedite progress and provide long-term results. Also, especially when it comes to behavioral interventions…many providers still use an approach that focuses on behavior rather than the reasons for the behavior and can lead to increased anxiety, low self-esteem, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. The Lockhart Mindful Method is an excellent compliment to therapies like OT and play therapy. It can even replace or prevent the need for behavioral therapy in some cases. Which has happened for members before. It can also reduce the time in therapy and accelerate progress.
